Research by the American Psychological Association suggests that hoarding is a distinct disorder, often associated with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The need to accumulate items can be overwhelming to the individual with this compulsion, and even the thought of discarding their collections can provoke severe distress and anxiety.
