How Can You Shape the Future of Aging?

September celebrates Healthy Aging Month, sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. The goal of this month is to highlight recent scientific advancements in healthy aging, global insights on longevity, and steps everyone can take to stay independent as we age. 

Each of us will get older! While we cannot stop the inevitable genetic march towards aging, what we can do is mindfully practice the steps towards healthy and independent aging. To shape your aging future, consider these steps.

1. Intentional Movement: We've all heard that 30 minutes of exercise 3-4 days a week is healthy, but did you know that any purposeful movement also improves your health and wellness? Take those extra steps from the car to the store, dance while making dinner, or sing while cleaning!
2. Nourish Your Body: A healthy range of foods that support your body's function is important over a lifetime. To avoid GI issues as you age, balance protein, fiber and nutrients in each meal. Don't forget to allow yourself foods you enjoy! Allowing foods like ice cream and potato chips can keep us from binging and having an unhealthy relationship with food.
3. Maintain Home Safety: The #1 safety issue that impedes healthy aging is falls. Falling can lead to broken bones, head injuries, internal bleeding and anxiety. Keeping your home clean from dirt, well-lit, and clear of clutter can go a long ways to maintaining healthy aging and independence.
4. Positive Attitude: Research shows that if you have a positive attitude towards aging, it can add years to your life. Re-thinking aging with a lens of optimizing strengths, compensating for challenges and selecting activities that bring you happiness is the right recipe for healthy aging.
5. Stay Active: A balance of activities that include time with friends and family, fun activities by yourself, and learning new things can keep your spirit and mind young.

The Dangers of Going It Alone

You've heard the adage that asking for help somehow means being "weak," "not smart enough," or "dependent." Yet in this world, we never truly do things on our own -- as leaders, parents, family members, colleagues, and friends, the connection and engagement with others keeps us healthy and happy. 

If you find a tenant or a family member who has gotten overwhelmed with cleaning, decluttering or managing their household safety, this is definitely not a time to go it alone.

On a practical level, while you want to help the person right away by potentially cleaning a cluttered and unsanitary space, it may lead to a host of additional issues, such as:

• The spread of viruses or bacteria possibly being inhaled without proper ventilation equipment.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of this month and our newsletter theme of Asking for Help, we offer this information and reminders as a way to support all of us in our health journey.  

Statistics about Breast Cancer

• Breast cancer caused 685,000 deaths globally in 2020.
• Roughly half of all breast cancers occur in women with no specific risk factors other than sex and age.
• Breast cancer occurs in every country in the world.
• Approximately 0.5–1% of breast cancers occur in men.

Signs & Symptoms

Breast cancer can have combinations of symptoms, especially when it is more advanced. Most people will not experience any symptoms when the cancer is still early.

Symptoms of breast cancer can include:

• a breast lump or thickening, often without pain
• change in size, shape or appearance of the breast
• dimpling, redness, pitting or other changes in the skin
• change in nipple appearance or the skin surrounding the nipple (areola)
• abnormal or bloody fluid from the nipple.

Please seek medical care if you find a lump in your breast, even if the lump does not hurt. 

Most breast lumps are not cancer. Breast lumps that are cancerous are more likely to be successfully treated when they are small and have not spread to nearby lymph nodes. Be sure to do your breast self-exam monthly and reach out for medical advice asap if you find a lump.

National Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide Prevention: Be There, Be The One To Help

September marks National Suicide Prevention Month – a month to remember the lives lost to suicide, the millions of people who have struggled with suicidal ideation, and acknowledge the individuals, families, and communities that have been impacted. It is also a time to raise awareness about suicide prevention and share messages of hope.

Suicide is a public health problem because of its far-reaching effects:

• Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. It was responsible for over 48,000 deaths in 2021.
• In 2021, an estimated 12.3 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.5 million made a plan for suicide, and 1.7 million attempted suicide.
• People who have experienced violence, including child abuse, bullying, or sexual violence are at higher risk for suicide.
• In 2021, suicide was the second leading cause of death for people ages 25-34 years.
• 79% of all people who die by suicide are male.
• Although more women than men attempt suicide, men are 4x more likely to die by suicide.
• Suicide is the 2^nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-14, the 3^rd leading cause of death among those aged 15-24 and the 12th leading cause of death overall in the U.S.
• 46% of people who die by suicide had a diagnosed mental health condition — but research suggests that 90% may have experienced symptoms of a mental health condition

Suicide prevention is everyone’s business. Be there and be the one to ask, keep them safe and help them connect to crisis resources.

What To Watch For:

Individual, relationship, community, and societal factors may influence the risk of suicide.

Know the suicide warning signs including:

• Feeling like a burden
• Being isolated
• Increased anxiety
• Feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
• Increased substance use
• Looking for a way to access lethal means
• Increased anger or rage
• Extreme mood swings
• Expressing hopelessness
• Sleeping too little or too much
• Talking or posting about wanting to die
• Making plans for suicide

How To Get Help

Safeguard the people in your life from the risk of suicide and support them:

• Ask.
• Keep them safe.
• Be there.
• Help them connect. You can start with the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org).
• Follow up.
• Learn more about suicide prevention from the CDC Suicide Prevention Resources for Action website or the SAMHSA 988 Hotline website.

The Power of Patience

It was a Monday in June, and we were half a day into a week-long project. The home in which we were working was moving its way through the docket of the Franklin County Environmental Courts for several code violations involving unsafe conditions due to excessive clutter, non-functioning mechanicals and general unsanitary living conditions. 

It’s not uncommon for us to be working in a home that Code Enforcement has “Red Tagged”, a status in which the owner(s) may not legally occupy the residence until safety violations have been remedied. In this particular home, we were tasked with removing what ended up being approximately 17 tons of non-salvageable clothing, household items, furniture, appliances and trash. 

On that particular Monday in June, Becky, one of my Project Managers, called me over to show me something she’d found while sorting for family photographs and other irreplaceable items in a waist-deep pile of mostly trash in the living room.  It was one of my business cards. 

Having gone through several styles of cards over the years, I recognized it as being at least five years old.  Someone in the client’s life had given her my card, and she’d kept it for all those years without calling until just recently.  It makes me wonder how her life might have been impacted had she called sooner. 

There are many reasons a home can reach this degree of dysfunction and why it takes people a long period of time to reach out for help. Compulsive Hoarding Disorder (also known as Hoarding Disorder) is a mental disorder characterized by accumulation of possessions due to excessive acquisition of or difficulty discarding them, regardless of their actual value (APA). This leads to significant distress or impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning. 

While this disorder is often a root cause of the clutter and decline in function, we find that most of our clients living in hoarding-like conditions don’t have a formal diagnosis. Most would describe themselves as struggling with periodic bouts of depression and living with some degree of physical disability (often age-related). They may hide their condition from family, friends, doctors and others. The shame, embarrassment, fear, and overwhelming anxiety around compulsive hoarding and possible consequences can paralyze the person's decision-making capabilities. 

It reminded me of another client who had my card for eleven months and had even set a daily reminder in her phone to call me.  Eleven months was how long it took her to work up the courage to call. When she finally called, I told her that she’d called the right place and that we could help. I remember her sobbing through the phone with relief that she had finally made the call and was met with compassion and concern, rather than shame. 

These are our clients, and regardless of the reasons that they find themselves living in these conditions, we help to restore the functionality and safety in their homes.  We do this without judgment and with respect for their right to dignity and self-determination.  I know we’ve made an indelible, positive impact on those lives and many others. It’s why we do what we do.

How To Help

If someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or in an unhealthy living situation, but is struggling to ask for help, there are many ways to help them.

Here are a couple of tips, whether you are a friend, family member or an acquaintance: 

• Just start the conversation: You don't have to be an expert or know all the answers but letting them know you are there for them and want to help is a good start.
• Show patience and caring: A non-judgmental, gentle approach is best and actively listen to their concerns.
• Encourage them to seek help from a professional: Remind them that seeking help is a sign of strength and self-care.
• Persistence is key: Consistently showing up with kindness and compassion can build the groundwork of trust that facilitates the next step in asking for help.

• Hoarding disorder is treatable and people can succeed in living healthy, functional lives.

National Law Enforcement Museum Post - 9/11 Exhibit

The National Law Enforcement Museum will present a new exhibition to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and honor the officers who rose to the challenge that day. This will be the first exhibition to focus on the significant changes to U.S. law enforcement that occurred in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
